VIRGINIA LEGISLATIVE AGENDA FOR WOMEN

Virginia laws don't always work for the everyday woman.

NWPC-VA invites you to bring a friend as we kick off our Virginia Legislative Agenda for Women (V-LAW). V-LAW will empower Virginians to learn about an issue and apply creative problem solving skills to improve Virginia’s laws for women. This fall we will focus on virtual sexual harassment (aka the still legal in Virginia “dick pics”) .

Join us on September 9th as we kick off this empowering series.

Session One- Laying out the Issues

NWPC-VA will host the first V-LAW series highlighting women who have experienced it all.  Participants will hear from survivors and legal experts about the ramifications of how Virginia law did not support the needs of Virginia women.

Session Two- The History of Legislation in Virginia

On Thursday, September 23, at 6:00 pm, NWPC-VA Members and guests will engage with Virginia lawmakers interested in assisting Virginia women tackle virtual harassment obstacles through the 2022 legislative process. Experts will discuss current and past legislation that has led to the need to focus on this policy issue.

Session Three- Bring Us your Voice-Brainstorming Advocacy and Legislation

Thursday, September 30 at 6:00 pm, members and invited guests will be placed in breakout rooms to brainstorm legislation that NWPC-VA will push for during the start of 2022.  Teams will draft legislation addressing Virtual Harassment in Virginia.  Teams will submit their plan by the end of the session to be scored and evaluated for the title of  V-LAW CHAMPION.

Session Four- Connect and Amplify Our Voices

The final V-LAW Session on October 7th at 6:00 pm, We are excited to welcome Julie Jakopic from iLead Strategies , Yvonne Lewis from Virginia Beach Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, and Marj Signer from Virginia NOW - National Organization for Women as our panelists. We are bringing these organizations and NWPC-VA members to the table to lay out the plan for our legislative virtual harassment policy for GA2022.  Participants will leave the session armed with the knowledge, language, and tools to make sure this issue is front and center.

V-Law General Assembly Legislative Review 2022

Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at 11:00 A.M.

You may remember the Inaugural Women's Equality Summit in 2020. The event kicked off with a team of female skydivers from the Women's Skydiving Network. VARatifyERA Director Kati Hornung, NWPC-VA President Andrea Miller, First Lady Pamela Northam, and Pro Team-Co Founder Melanie Curtis were our honored guests. Legislators were invited to share their legislation that was related to women and equality.

We are using the same formula this year, but instead of an in-person event we are sticking to Zoom. Legislators will provide a ten minute discussion of a bill related to women and equality. They are encouraged to provide an overview, key talking points, and requested actions from NWPC-VA members and invited guests. We want to build public support and awareness around issues that are important to women in the Commonwealth. We are inviting legislators from each side of the aisle to encourage women in elected office to work together to build a better Virgina for women and families.
